There is a larger woman at a coffee stand in the middle of a big and busy mall during Christmastime. There are many people waiting in line for coffee. I, too, am in line for coffee, surveying the surroundings while I move forward, person by person.
The larger woman has already gotten her drink, and she bends over nearly to her waist to slurp whipped cream and foam and marshmallows from the top of her cup
which she has set on the counter with the half-and-half, the Splenda , the cocoa powder, powdered creamer, white sugar, etc.
She opens her mouth wide and shamelessly and her lips ripple to reach the sweet foaminess, as her fleshy torso ripples and flops beneath
her grey-blue sweatshirt and elastic-waist pants. She has a pale peach-grey facial skin tone. Her hair is brown and grey and swooped messily into a bun, with large strands falling out around her eyes.
Her eyes are focused on her overflowing coffee drink. She moves her head slightly, and I think she might glance at me in line. I slightly move my head away from her, a twinge of shame to be staring. But she only reaches for marshmallows and turns back to her coffee. I cannot see her eyes from behind her large grey-tan-rimmed glasses. Also, she is at too great of a distance,
and I am approaching the counter to order my drink. I look away from her, to pay attention to ordering. I will get a small cappuccino with organic soy milk. I will hold my cup and suck the foam into my mouth.
I will walk away from the stand, and from watching this large woman, and I will continue to observe these mall-shoppers,
jittering with caffeine in their veins and feverish drives to consume, consume, consume, shamelessly, as directed by the life situations into which they seem to be irreversibly embedded. I will watch with present green eyes, brown hair, a bright blue shirt, gulping while trying to sip my cappuccino.
Maybe she’ll do the same, walk and watch through her gray-tan-rimmed lenses...
...watch and shop as she sips, slurps, buys, sucks, holds, rustles, purchases, bends, turns, twitches, coughs, consumes, consumes, consumes.
I forgot about her until now, when I've written this.
